Humanitarian protection of animals – ethical and legal context
Abstract
The aim of the article is to discuss the issue of humanitarian protection of animals especially by the ban on cruelty to and killing of animals. The mentioned issue has been shown simultaneously as a problem that has a reference to established legal solutions as well as a concern of a philosophical, moral and ethical nature.
Moreover, the content of the article is in some way intended to systematise the knowledge in the field of humanitarian protection of animals, not only in the area of law, but also within an utilised conceptual network. Apart from discussing legal regulations in this area at the international level, the evolution of Polish laws on this subject has been exhibited.
Furthermore, the article presents terms related to reification, dereification and personification as concepts of regulating the legal status of animals. As a continuation of the above mentioned considerations, there is a mention to issues of killing, putting to death and slaughtering of animals that, de facto, lead to taking away of the animals’ lives.
